The Blackstairs Eco Trail Tour

Blackstairs Eco Trails is not a walking club, not a forced march through the local landscape ,but a slow relaxing unfolding of the secret natural life of the Blackstairs Mountains and River Barrow area in the scenic and unspoilt area of south Carlow, Ireland

See Booking Details below

This is what we offer in the Blackstairs Eco Trail 2 hour tour

A two hour amble through the lovely lanes, lowlands, bogs and streams of the Blackstairs and the River Barrow, Co. Carlow, Ireland, with expert guides

Depending on the weather, the tours will be in the foothills of the Blackstairs – low hills or no hills – or along the River Barrow in the Townslands of Rathanna, Tomduff, Liselican or Raheen and down the Barrow to Clashganny and Ballytighlea.  We will look at the natural topography of the landscape, the local archaeology – Carlow has some fine dolmens, standing stones and cairns. We will stop to look at lichens and mosses, grasses and ferns, birds and mammals.

We will slowly learn about Blackcaps (Birds) ,Bucklers (Ferns), Boletus( Fungi ), Blues,(Butterflies). We will watch for Otters and Kingfishers and the little Dipper who likes nesting under the many stone bridges in our county… and so much more.

TOUR ITINERARY

We begin at the  Old Rectory Killedmond, Borris with tea/coffee and home-made biscuits and scones at 12 noon. Here we’ll have an introductory chat about the day’s adventures and then off to the Blackstairs or the Barrow…. a short drive from the Old Rectory.

 crocus in Killedmond

After the tour we’ll return to Killedmond where we will name all we have found on the walk.

A good old-fashioned Rectory Tea will be included in the price at the end of the walk. Most food is organically produced at Killedmond.

wonder if i could arrange this asap. i really would absolutely adore this. the lane looks grand, the scooter can do this without a doubt.

  2. Hi Mary,
Very interested in your eco trails. We have been exploring the barrow trail with our kids over the last couple of years and they are well able for a two hour walk, even at age 4 and 6. But now we have a baby too and am wondering if your eco trails are buggy friendly?

    • Thanks for enquiry. Yes baby and buggy would be more than welcome on our eco trails.! Lots to see, , listen to and forage for on our trails. Look forward to seeing you soon.
      Mary
